Lial Miller's MSU-MATC Educational Journey

HOME

DEAR READER,

My name is Lial Miller and I am a sixth-year art teacher for the Lansing School District, in Lansing MI. This is my second career, having spent 16 years building robots as a machinist in the Greater Pontiac, MI area. In order to obtain my Bachelor's Degree, I took 90 credit hours, in two years, at The University Of Michigan-FlintMott Community College and Oakland Community College. I also work as a fire fighter for the Atlas Township Fire Department.

I was hired by the Lansing School District over the summer of my graduation (2005) and I have been placed in 20 buildings over my time with the district. This rotating placement has introduced me to a whole different world than what I had experienced growing up, or working on machines. I have been placed in a Middle School, Arts oriented Magnet building, an English as Learned Language building (with 21 different languages spoken), and a building that services students with special needs. I have been on loan to the Greater Lansing Diocese as an art teacher and even spent one year as a half-time Computer Applications teacher to the Diocese, including Lansing Catholic High School. These experiences have tempered my teaching style and have helped me hone my approach to classroom management.

I usually service about 600 students per school year and it becomes very hard to remember names. I can remember faces though and it is fun when a student sees me and claims me as their former art teacher. I have seen some former students that have already graduated from High School and it warms my heart to hear how they are proceeding with life, or how much they liked being in my classroom.

I started taking classes at Michigan State University for credits toward my Professional Certificate and to obtain my Masters Degree. I wound up taking two Masters Degrees (the other being in Educational Technology) in just over two years. This site is dedicated to my journey through the Masters of Arts in Teaching and Curriculum program, displaying some of my coursework and discussing the knowledge gained by taking these classes. Please enjoy!

Thank You,
Lial Miller
